US officials raise concerns over Israeli intelligence after Hamas attacks

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 01:16:28 GMT

(CNN) — American officials said Saturday they received no warning through intelligence that Hamas was preparing to attack Israel, leading to confusion among some at how Israel failed to detect signs of the rocket assault. The capability of Hamas to coordinate terrorist attacks on Israeli towns without detection has raised concerns about technological blind spots for US intelligence officials, a senior US intelligence official told CNN.US officials had been monitoring indications that tensions were escalating in recent months. But there was no tactical-level intelligence that alerted US officials that an attack of this size would happen on this day.The question for US and Israeli intelligence officials now is whether there were indicators that were missed – or whether Israel and the US failed to collect any information that would have helped predict the assault.Israeli and US officials will compile reports “in the coming days to see whether there were things missed or if the...

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde pushed the same buttons in ALDS Game 1 he has all season. They didn’t work out. | ANALYSIS

Brandon Hyde’s five seasons leading the Orioles have hinted how he might handle a playoff game. His postseason managerial debut in many ways aligned with what would be expected.Even during Baltimore’s rebuild, Hyde showed a devotion to matchups, seeking any platoon advantage available. Often in those early years, the right decisions backfired; the Orioles lacked the talent for even the most logical choices — say, bringing in a left-handed reliever to face a pocket of left-handed hitters — to be executed correctly. That’s certainly not the case with the 2023 Orioles, who won 101 regular-season games to claim the American League East title. But they fell to the Texas Rangers, 3-2, in Game 1 of the AL Division Series partly because the decisions he made, logical as they were, did not pan out.Twice, he brought in a left-handed pinch hitter to face a right-handed reliever with at least one runner on base; both were retired. He started a string of matchup...

Orioles reliever DL Hall, who spent his summer away from competition, thrives in it in ALDS Game 1 loss to Rangers

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 01:16:28 GMT

As the Orioles fought for an American League East title and the Triple-A Norfolk Tides similarly vied for a league crown, top prospect DL Hall was with neither ballclub. The left-hander, who debuted for Baltimore in 2022, instead spent six of his summer weeks in Florida at the team’s spring training facility to focus on strength training and rebuilding his velocity. He returned to Triple-A in late July, was called up to the Orioles in August and, on Saturday, turned in a strong relief performance in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. Despite Baltimore’s 3-2 loss to the Texas Rangers, Hall provided stability out of the bullpen, striking out three and not allowing a hit in 1 2/3 innings.“The ultimate goal was to get up here and be able to help these guys,” the 25-year-old Hall told The Baltimore Sun after the game. “It was a long road, obviously wish I could’ve been up here sooner, but it’s the end of the year and we got here...

Opinion: The time is now to trade Justin Fields

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 01:16:28 GMT

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields' stock has never been higher than it is right now, and if the Bears don't see him as the long-term answer under center, as the saying goes, it is best to strike (a deal) when the iron's hot.Fields is coming off his second straight four touchdown performance after Chicago dismantled the Washington Commanders, 40-20, in their own house Thursday night. Waking up Friday morning, Fields was tied for the NFL-lead in touchdown passes with fellow NFC North quarterback Kirk Cousins (11) and stood sixth overall in passing yards on the season (1,143) — ahead of folks like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Justin Herbert in both categories.Quarterback play is king in today's NFL, and Fields' meteoric rise over the last two weeks puts the Bears in a precarious position, one where they are poised to trade, quite possibly, the first player in the history of their franchise that possesses multi-pro bowl caliber talent at the quarterback position.Chicago sports ...
