The discovery of Suzanne Morphew’s body more than three years after the 49-year-old mother disappeared from her Chaffee County home could be the key to unraveling the mystery of what happened to her — but the dropped prosecution of her husband thrusts the case into complicated legal territory, experts told The Denver Post on Thursday.Who should be charged, which prosecutor’s office should pursue the case and whether that initial attempt at a prosecution might hobble a second try are all up for debate, they said.“This whole situation presents many novel issues that are fascinating from a legal perspective,” said Doug Richards, a Denver defense attorney not involved in the case.Colorado Bureau of Investigation agents found Morphew’s remains on Sept. 22 near Moffat in Saguache County, about a 45-minute drive from her home in Maysville, where she was last seen alive before she was reported missing on May 10, 2020. Her husband, 55-year-old Barry Morphe...

NFL coaches won’t often acknowledge their team or unit or position was overmatched in a game.Vance Joseph did Wednesday, even if it was stating the obvious. In the Broncos defensive coordinator’s first news conference since Denver gave up 70 points to Miami on Sunday, Joseph vowed to engineer a turnaround and took the brunt of the blame for an historically poor outing.“The speed, the angles, it was obviously overwhelming for us.” Joseph said of the Dolphins’ 10-touchdown, 726-yard outing.“Obviously, it wasn’t good. When your unit plays that way, my first thought is, ‘it’s me.’ I have to do better as a coach and getting guys ready for the challenge. It was a tough day from Play 1 to play whatever we played. As a coach and as an experienced coach who knows those days happen, it’s always on me first.“I’ll fix it. Quickly. I have to.”While Chicago’s offense is nowhere near as potent as Miami’s...

Cover Story: The Meteoric Metamorphosis of La Monarca Panaderia

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 00:41:51 GMT

When Alfredo Livas and Ricardo Cervantes were little boys growing up in Monterrey, Mexico, they never ran into each other after school when they indulged in hot chocolate and pastries in the region’s many panaderias. It wasn’t until 20 years later that they met in California and memories of that afternoon ritual would metamorphosize into La Monarca Bakery, a chain of 12 bakeries celebrating their Mexican heritage. The pair met while studying at Stanford Business School and spent nights reminiscing about the bakeries in Monterrey. The 20-somethings noticed that the Hispanic market was a woefully underserved sleeping giant. “If you went to a Mexican neighborhood 20 years ago in L.A. or the Bay Area, there were no Starbucks or In & Out,” Livas tells L.A. Weekly, up to his elbows in conchas, cakes and orejitas in his Highland Park store. “We started comparing that to how things were in Mexico and wanted to recreate that community. We knew we wanted to do a brand that resonated with t...

As someone who attended the biggest nonsporting event this summer at the stadium, I would have thought the city would get some profit. The city of Santa Clara and the 49ers have always had disagreements but I assumed it was just logistical issues. However, I suppose other factors still directly benefited the city with the nonsporting events. For example, Taylor Swift’s two-night gig at the stadium gave Santa Clara the biggest economic boost since before the pandemic. With hotel sales and transportation, all that money went to the city, not the stadium. In the end, it realistically evens out financially.Brianna HuffmasterSan JoseSan Jose must do moreto s...
