Race for the West: Warriors can’t capitalize on Mavs’ slide, Lakers’ loss in LeBron return

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 22:04:17 GMT

There are many reasons why the Warriors’ stunning collapse against the Timberwolves on Sunday night stung. But perhaps the biggest? It was a major opportunity to create separation in the West and avoid the play-in games.Golden State currently sits in sixth place in the West at 39-37 with six games left in their regular season. Because of last night’s 99-96 loss to Minnesota, the Timberwolves are only half a game behind the Warriors, with a 38-37 record and one additional game left to play.Sunday looked to be a day that set up perfectly for Golden State. The Dallas Mavericks lost in Charlotte to fall to 36-39 and crash into 11th place, even with both Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić playing. The Los Angeles Lakers got LeBron James back but dropped a home game to the Chicago Bulls, falling to 37-38 and a tie for ninth place with Oklahoma City.Had the Warriors won on Sunday, they would currently be tied for fourth with the Suns (39-35), slotted into the fifth seed thanks to tiebreakers. By Hanna Arhirova | Associated PressZAPORIZHZHIA, Ukraine — The U.N.’s atomic energy chief warned during a meeting Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the perilous situation at Europe’s largest nuclear plant “isn’t getting any better” as relentless fighting in the area keeps the facility at risk of a disaster. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant’s six reactors are in shutdown and it is receiving the electricity it needs to prevent a reactor meltdown through just one remaining power line. It has on occasion had to switch to emergency diesel generators to power its essential cooling systems. In a meeting with Zelenskyy in southern Ukraine covered exclusively by The Associated Press, International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi said the situation at the plant remains tense because of the heavy military presence around it and a blackout that recently struck the facility, something that has occurred repe...

Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in Israel over the past three months to protest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to overhaul the country’s judiciary. The protests have drawn from a broad swath of Israeli society: young and old, religious and secular, residents of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and beyond.Wearing “Handmaid’s Tale” costumes, carrying sharp-witted signs and flying the ubiquitous blue-and-white national flag, protesters have blocked main highways and disrupted daily life in their effort to fight Netanyahu’s ultranationalist and ultra-Orthodox government. On Monday, Netanyahu bowed to the discontent by announcing a delay in the plan and saying that he wanted “to avoid civil war” by seeking a compromise with political opponents during the next several weeks. If passed, the series of laws would limit the Supreme Court’s powers and give politicians greater control over judicial appointments. The proposal has plunged Israel into its worst domestic crisis i...

Business Highlights: Silicon Valley Bank; Kia, Hyundai

___Deal to buy Silicon Valley Bank calms bank fears, for nowNEW YORK (AP) — First Citizens will acquire much of Silicon Valley Bank, the tech-focused financial institution whose lightning-quick failure this month set off a chain reaction that rattled faith in banks around the world. The sale underscores that Silicon Valley Bank’s assets do have value and helps to rebuild some faith. Stocks of several beaten down banks rose in a show of strength after the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. announced the deal. But investors and experts caution the sale doesn’t by itself provide an immediate all-clear for other banks following the second- and third-largest U.S. failures in history. That will likely take more time.___Fed official: SVB itself was main cause of bank’s failureWASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s top financial regulator is asserting that Silicon Valley Bank’s own management was largely to blame for the bank’s failure earlier this month and says the Federal Reserve will review whethe...

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council on Monday declined a Russian request to investigate the blasts on the pipelines that move natural gas from Russia to Europe under the Baltic Sea.Russia, China and Brazil voted in favor of the Russian request, but other Security Council members abstained or said another investigation was unnecessary. For a resolution to be adopted by the U.N. Security Council, it needs a minimum of nine “yes” votes in the 15-member council, and no veto by one of the permanent members — the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France. The U.S. deputy ambassador, Robert Wood, said there was no need for a U.N. probe when investigations by Sweden, Denmark and Germany “are proceeding in a comprehensive, transparent and impartial manner.”“It was an attempt to discredit the work of ongoing national investigations and prejudice any conclusions they reached that do not comport to Russia’s predetermined and political narrative.
