Opinion: “Instagram” tourists should drop the act, stay on the trail and enjoy reality

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 21:28:47 GMT

A spectacular picture recently appeared on social media of a young lady in Arizona. She was poised on the edge of a cliff emblazoned with sunset colors. Immediately her online followers clamored to know where the picture was taken, so “I can get one just like it.”Turns out that it was taken on an off-trail route at the end of a potholed dirt road on the Navajo Nation, and required a permit to even enter the area. Also, I bet she did not climb to that precarious perch on that cliff wearing those fancy shoes.A local guide lamented that the area would now be getting a slew of “Instagram” tourists. These people would be seeking to replicate the pose with themselves perched on the very same edge, probably wearing those same shoes. This kind of thing has led to some decrying the unsavory habits of Instagram influencers. These are the folks who trample fields of wildflowers in order to get a shot of themselves displaying a sponsored product. Or who photograph their colorful paintings on wil...

Children’s Hospital Colorado has stopped performing chest reconstruction on transgender patients, though it will continue to offer non-surgical gender-affirming care. The hospital never performed surgery on patients under 18, and recently stopped offering it to young adults, spokeswoman Rachael Fowler said. Staff are assisting adult patients with referrals to other hospitals if they want to pursue surgery, she said.Patients can still receive other gender-affirming care in line with professional guidelines, which could include puberty-blocking medication or hormones, depending on the patient’s needs, Fowler said.A Denver woman whose son intended to receive “top surgery” – removal of the mammary glands and sculpting to create a masculine chest appearance – said her family was referred to the University of Colorado Hospital’s surgery center, which only operates on adults. While her son will turn 18 this fall, she’s concerned the delay could mean that ...

Beat The Heat With These Summer Cocktails

This summer is a scorcher and we’ve got six sexy tips to help you cool down, whether it’s a block from the beach in the only green zone on the weather map at The Victorian or by getting a brain freeze at Piccalilli. In the 1970s, two of Santa Monica’s most iconic and historic Victorian homes on Ocean Avenue were lifted off their foundations and trucked down to the corner of Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard, saving them from demolition due to development. One was the home built in 1894 for Roy Jones, son of longtime U.S. Sen. John Percival Jones, co-founder of Santa Monica. The other was the lesser-known and somewhat mysterious Kyte House, built around the same time and inhabited by the Southern California Masonic Lodges leader, Dr. George I. Kyte, and his family. They found their forever homes in what is now Heritage Square and were reborn as, respectively, the California Heritage Museum and a restaurant, the Victorian. Tits Out And Sunny at The Victorian (Michele Stueven)The...

Stinking Lizaveta Bring Anthems and Phantoms: What does that name mean? One day, we’ll have to ask them. For now, we can content ourselves with the technically dazzling and proggy metal that Philadelphia band Stinking Lizaveta offer to the world. They’re performing at the Knitting Factory NOHO on Friday, on a bill with the equally bizarrely named Telekinetic Yeti, and Somnuri and their ninth full length album, Anthems and Phantoms, is out now. Meanwhile, they released a video for the song “Shock” in June.“The audio and video are from a live performance, put together by Peter Wilder, featuring his brilliance.” said guitarist Yanni in a statement. “The riff was written by our bass player Alexi, it sounds like two electrodes being placed on either side of your head!”Of this tour, Yanni added, “We’re so excited to hit the road!  The band is a fine tuned machine now. We can’t wait to rock with all the people that we haven’t seen in so long, ...
