Novak Djokovic wins US Open for his 24th Grand Slam title

NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic emerged from an exhilarating and exhausting U.S. Open final with a 24th Grand Slam title on Sunday night, using every ounce of his energy and some serve-and-volley guile to get past Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in a match that was more closely contested than the straight-set score indicated.Djokovic, a 36-year-old from Serbia, moved one major singles title in front of Serena Williams to become the first player to win 24 in the Open era, which began in 1968. Margaret Court also collected a total of 24, but 13 of those came before professionals were admitted to the Slam events. There were moments, particularly in the 1-hour, 44-minute second set that was as much about tenacity as talent, when Djokovic appeared to be faltering. After some of the most grueling points — and there were many — he would lean over with hands on knees or use his racket for support or pause to stretch his legs. This triumph against Medvedev, the o...

Will the Vikings have center Garrett Bradbury for their next game?

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 01:41:02 GMT

Maybe it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Vikings looked out of sorts on offense in the early stages of Sunday’s season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.A couple of possessions into the game, starting center Garrett Bradbury walked into the medical tent with a lower back injury and did not return in the 20-17 loss. Now his status for Thursday’s primetime game against the Philadelphia Eagles is up in the air.“I would classify him as day-to-day,” head coach Kevin O’Connell said. “Whether Garrett is able to turn over on a short week or it’ll be (backup center Austin Scholttmann) out there, whatever combination we decide to go with, we’ll put together the plan that works while hopefully getting Garrett back as soon as we can.”Asked how he thought Scholttmann played in relief, quarterback Kirk Cousins praised him for stepping up.“We have great players,” Cousins said. “I think Austin Schlottmann did a...

Broncos Kareem Jackson on “bang-bang” play that drew critical penalty and injured Jakobi Meyers: “Obviously we don’t play this game to hurt guys”

Kareem Jackson knew his team needed the ball back.Third-and-8 from the Las Vegas 44-yard line, Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo hit Jakobi Meyers over the middle and Jackson laid out to try to stop him short of the first down.Jackson, though, hit Meyers high and Meyers crumpled to the turf. Players from both teams gathered around before he was able to sit up on his own and walk off the field with help from trainers.A scary situation and a costly 15-yard penalty on Jackson. A stop the Broncos desperately needed and failed to get — Las Vegas ran the final 2 minutes, 54 seconds off the clock thanks to a Garoppolo first-down run a minute later to secure a 17-16 victory. But also, hopefully, a serious injury avoided.“I just want to say I hope he’s alright,” Jackson told reporters afterward. “Obviously we don’t play this game to hurt guys. It’s a tough sport we play. … Unfortunately stuff like that happens. Definitely sending my thoughts and prayers ...

ARLINGTON, Texas — Oakland Athletics rookie right-hander Luis Medina had a rough start to Sunday’s game against the Texas Rangers, and the ending was not much better.Medina allowed three runs in the first inning and two more in the fifth in what became a 9-4 A’s loss to the Rangers at Globe Life Field, as Texas won consecutive games for the first time in September.Former Athletic Marcus Semien homered twice among his four hits, and Corey Seager went deep for the 30th time this season.Andrew Heaney (10-6), the odd man out of the Rangers rotation with All-Star right-hander Nathan Eovaldi back from the injured list, struck out six over 3 2/3 scoreless innings after taking over for Jon Gray in the third. It was the first relief appearance for the left-hander after 27 starts this season.Semien matched his career high with four hits for the second time in four games. Can Farhan Zaidi’s team meeting propel the SF Giants to the playoffs?

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 01:41:02 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — What can a team meeting accomplish? A regular feature of many clubhouses over the years, it’s something that’s easy to credit when it’s followed by success and equally easy to dismiss when it doesn’t lead to the desired results.“I’ve always been against meetings,” Giants reliever Luke Jackson said before their series finale against the Rockies, ESPN’s Sunday night game of the week. “I’ve been a part of most meetings and we lose afterward and they’re terrible. But this year, we’re 2-0 after meetings.”The latest, first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, came Friday, before their first game against Colorado, and the message came from on high. President Farhan Zaidi was first to address the group, but speakers also included longtime coach Ron Wotus and a handful of veterans. What followed were back-to-back wins, their first of September after starting the month with six straight losses. The team also responded to...
