Germany’s DAX lost 1% to 15,773.57 and the CAC 40 in Paris gave up 1.7% to 7,190.42. Britain’s FTSE 100 dropped 1.2% to 7,352.98. Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting released Wednesday showed that some central bank officials wanted to raise rates in mid-June, though in the end they voted unanimously to keep rates steady. The threat of further rate hikes has been weighing on investor sentiment. The next major focus for the U.S. will be jobs data due out on Friday.Markets are also watching for updates from Yellen’s ta...

FREDERICTON — The New Brunswick government has amassed nearly $41 million in security deposits collected from residential tenants in a practice that is unique in Canada and that critics say needs to change. The latest annual report from Service New Brunswick showed security deposits sitting at $40.9 million for the 2021-22 fiscal year, up from $36.4 million a year earlier. Amendments introduced in 1983 dictated that the province would oversee the collected deposits.Nichola Taylor, chair of the New Brunswick branch of housing rights group ACORN, called the province’s practice of holding onto the security deposits problematic. She said the process of recovering a security deposit is overly complicated, which could exp...
