Flying soon? Airplane turbulence may be worse than usual. Here's why

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 01:25:05 GMT

(NEXSTAR) – Taking a flight this winter? You may need to brace for a bumpier journey than usual, as a climate phenomenon could be cranking up the turbulence. That's because we're in an El Niño year — and it may even end up being a historically strong El Niño winter. El Niño doesn't just affect droughts, heat waves and hurricane season — new research suggests it could also impact how much turbulence planes experience in the air.Paul Williams, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Reading, presented his research on the subject during a meeting of the American Meteorological Society earlier this year. The science is complicated, but essentially Williams found a link between El Niño or La Niña years and the amount of clear-air turbulence (or CAT) in the atmosphere. ‘Historically strong’ El Niño possible: What it means for winter CAT is one type of turbulence you might experience while flying. It happens when skies look...

Working Strategies: Is it time for a career change?

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 01:25:05 GMT

Amy LindgrenTiming a career change can be tricky. Shift gears too quickly and you might be leaving something behind that you could have succeeded at. But wait too long and you might miss a window of opportunity. Or worse: You might take on a negative attitude based on disliking your work. And then there’s the question of why you would change careers at all. Some do it for something less — such as less travel, overtime or responsibility — while others are chasing something more, such as more money, prestige, opportunity. It could be that you have no choice but to change, especially if your current field is in decline or you’ve lost your ability to do the work.If you’ve been considering a career change, timing is just one of the puzzle pieces you’ll be wrangling into place. You’ll also be thinking about which new path to follow, how to find new colleagues and connections and whether to get some training or experience so you don’t have to start over at the bottom.Changing ca...

Game predictionsMatt Schubert, sports editor: This place is ready to explode. Will the Buffs deliver in Coach Prime’s debut? That probably boils down to this: stopping Nebraska’s run game. Given what happened last week against TCU, that’s not a given. But … Colorado 27, Nebraska 21.Kyle Newman, sports reporter:  It comes down to the wire and the Huskers physicality is all the Buffs can handle. What’s causing California’s ocean waves to glow?

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 01:25:05 GMT

Earlier this week, a photographer and videographer captured boogie boarders surfing some bioluminescent waves in Huntington Beach. The glow from the waves is a result of algae that is disturbed at night and causes bioluminescence. Nate Jaros, senior director of fish and invertebrates at the Aquarium of the Pacific told KTLA that the microalgae, called a dinoflagellate, is associated with a red tide and gives the water a red-colored tint during the day while creating a bioluminescent glow when disturbed at night. “It's the same type of organism when you have a red tide, which gives the water kind of an orangish brown, red kind of tint when they are in high density during the day,” he said. “But at night when disturbed, they produce bioluminescence. So when there's a lot of agitation in the surf, it can activate that bioluminescence which makes the waves appear to be glowing.”The microalgae always exists in the water, but during the summer when the water is warmer and contains mo...
