JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — With her insurance about to run out and Republicans in her home state of Missouri ramping up rhetoric against gender-affirming health care, Erin Stille nervously visited a foreign pharmaceutical site as a “last resort” to ensure she could continue getting the hormones she needs. Stille, 26, sent a $300 bank transfer to a Taiwan-based supplier for a 6-month supply of estrogen patches and androgen-blocking pills. For three weeks she feared she’d been scammed but breathed a sigh of relief when a large package arrived at her home in St. Peters.“It’s definitely a little scary,” Stille said. “Taking a chance like this, I could have my money stolen and there’s not much I can do about it. But I figured, at this point, that the benefits outweigh the risks.”Stille, and others nationwide, are scrambling to form contingency plans as Republican politicians rapidly erode access to the gender-affirming treatments many credit as life-saving. Should school use ‘Warrior’ nickname? Tribe to have last say

Published Fri, 14 Feb 2025 00:13:41 GMT

SALAMANCA, N.Y. (AP) — The profile of a Native American man, a braid trailing down and feather jutting up, is tiled into a high school hallway, dyed into the weight room carpet and laid into the turf of the football field at Salamanca city schools.School leaders say the omnipresent logo and “Warrior” name for the school athletic teams are sources of pride here, in the only U.S. city built on land leased from a Native American reservation. But as New York joins states moving to ban schools’ use of Indigenous nicknames and mascots because they diminish Native cultures, the tribe may have the last say over whether the logo stays. When the state Board of Regents this month voted to prohibit public schools’ use of Indigenous names, it included an exception for districts that receive written approval from a federally recognized tribal nation in New York.It has put the tribe in an awkward spot. While the Seneca Indian Nation’s leader has endorsed the ban, some citizens of the nation want to ...

China’s manufacturing contracts, signaling recovery concerns

BEIJING (AP) — China’s factory activity declined in April, an official survey showed Sunday, signaling policymakers’ challenges in sustaining momentum in the country’s economic recovery.According to the government statistics bureau and an official industry group, a monthly purchasing managers’ index declined to 49.2 from March’s 51.9 on a 100-point scale where numbers below 50 indicate activity contracting.Measures of production, new orders and employment dropped from the previous month, the National Bureau of Statistics and the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing said. But they said the index for production remained above 50, meaning that there was still an expansion. China’s economic growth accelerated in the first quarter of this year after the abrupt end of anti-virus controls. But authorities cautioned that the country will likely face import and export pressures in the coming months amid an uncertain global economic outlook, and warned of inadequate dome...

SF Giants, Padres play home run derby in Mexico City: ‘Never seen anything like that’

MEXICO CITY — Even a home run trot can be tiring a mile and a half above sea level, and there were plenty of test cases Saturday in the Giants’ 16-11 loss to the Padres. But perhaps none more visceral than Brandon Crawford, who did it twice in the span of two pitches.“Even though it was just a slow jog around the bases, it’s still a little tiring at this altitude,” Crawford said. “But I didn’t mind.”It was that kind of night for the Giants and Padres, who combined to leave the yard 11 times in the first regular-season MLB game in the Mexican capital. The homers traveled a total of 4,858 feet — a career-long and game-high 482 feet on Crawford’s third-inning blast — still well short of Mexico City’s 7,350-foot elevation.Crawford was called back to home plate after rounding the bases for his first time, after his curving line drive down the right field line was initially ruled a home run but was determined to be foul upon replay review.
