Why speeding doesn’t save drivers much time

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 00:56:28 GMT

We’re all guilty. Most cars can go well over the speed limit on freeways and surface streets, and we’ve all been in a rush to get somewhere, at some point. But aside from being illegal and dangerous, there is a practical reason why experts say people should generally avoid speeding. It doesn’t save much time.Researchers with the U.S. Army studied the impact of speeding on trip lengths. It found that the time you can shave off a trip by speeding isn’t that much to start, and goes down dramatically as speeds go up.The U.S. Army examined how long it takes to drive 15 miles at three different speed limits, and then how much time is saved by going 10 miles per hour over each of those limits, according to hiroad.com.If the speed limit is 35 mph, it takes around 25 minutes to travel 15 miles. If, instead, you go 45 mph, you save about five minutes. If the speed limit is 50 mph, it takes 18 minutes to travel 15 miles. If you were going 60 miles per hour, you would get to the destination three m...

FDIC recommends overhauling insurance deposit system

By Sharon L. Lynch | Associated PressNEW YORK — The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. is recommending the U.S. rethink its decades-old policy of insuring up to $250,000 in bank deposits and replace it with an overhaul that would allow regulators to cover higher amounts on a “targeted” basis. The proposed change appears to openly acknowledge that the FDIC is looking for ways to calm both depositors and markets as the organization contends with the third U.S. bank failure this year. First Republic Bank became the second largest failure in history Monday when regulators seized it and JP Morgan Chase stepped up as a buyer.“The recent failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, and the decision to approve Systemic Risk Exceptions to protect the uninsured depositors at those institutions, raised fundamental questions about the role of deposit insurance in the United States banking system,” FDIC Chairman Martin J.
