After Wednesday night’s series finale against the Seattle Mariners, the Red Sox head out on a lengthy road trip that will keep them out west until after Memorial Day weekend.First up? A visit to an old friend.Over the weekend, the Red Sox will have to contend with the shortstop who played more games for them than any other in franchise history. After 10 seasons in the majors, 1,264 regular-season games, two championships, and a slew of personal achievements, Xander Bogaerts opted out of his contract last fall, became a free agent, and signed an 11-year, $280 million deal with the San Diego Padres.Over 42 games with the first non-Red Sox team of his professional career, Bogaerts has collected 42 hits, including seven doubles, six home runs, 25 runs and 15 RBI. He’s also stolen four bases, drawn 22 walks and only struck out 29 times.Meanwhile, Boston’s middle infield is a hodgepodge, cobbled together, and decidedly less durable than it was during the Bogaerts era. Amid rising tensions, Boston City Council President Ed Flynn recommended that the body implement a no-tolerance policy for bullying in the workplace.Months of heated discussions between councilors on opposite sides of a fraught redistricting process, along with reports that council staffers were mistreated, led to the proposal, several councilors suggested on Wednesday.“It’s critical that we treat, as councilors, our staff with respect, and central staff as well with respect,” Flynn said at a City Council meeting. “We should have had this policy in place 30 years ago, but I’m going to get this implemented before I leave as president.”The “policy on workplace bullying” would apply to all employees of the City Council, including councilors, their individual staff, and central office employees. And they also argue Teixeira should remain detained because he continued to look at and copy classified information even after he was reprimanded by his superiors.A redacted letter dated September 2022 from a Massachusetts Air National Guard master sergeant says they were “made aware” that Teixeira had been “observed taking notes on cla...

Campaign spending on childcare may be possible under proposed law

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Maricopa County has a failed process for verifying thousands of ballot signatures that even some of its own workers question, attorneys for Kari Lake argued in court Wednesday. The Republican’s lawyers spent most of the first day of a three-day trial showing video and taking testimony from two previous signature screeners who alleged staff was overwhelmed. The allegations are the only remaining legal claim in Lake’s challenge of her defeat six months ago to Democrat Katie Hobbs in the Arizona governor’s race.“There’s simply no way to review signatures with respect to procedures,” Kurt Olsen, one of Lake’s attorneys said. The former TV anchor was among the most vocal of last year’s Republican candidates promoting former President Donald Trump’s election lies, which she made the centerpiece of her campaign. Lake listened to the proceedings from a seat in the back of the courtroom but did not speak. She left two hours into the hearing. While most other...
