How to protect yourself from credit card fraud — and what to do when it’s too late

Published Fri, 14 Feb 2025 00:26:05 GMT

Young Canadians are increasingly the targets of financial fraud, experts say, as the age group most comfortable with buying products online is likewise most exposed to risk.Sixty-five per cent of generation Z and millennials reported being a victim of at least one type of financial fraud in their lifetime, according to a recent survey conducted by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada.Experts’ advice on the matter? Stay vigilant. “We’ve always assumed older people tend to be the biggest victims for fraud and scams, but our data has shown that it is the Millennial cohort — the digital-first cohort — who are the victims of this recent increase in fraud due to this innate trust they have in technology,” said Maryam Saeed, head of risk at Visa Canada. “It’s important to understand the environment we’re currently operating in,” she continued. “As digital payments have grown and consumers expect quick, frictionless and uninterrupted payment experiences, it’s a...

Uganda activists file new Paris case over TotalEnergies’ East Africa oil pipeline project

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Ugandan activists brought another legal case Tuesday against French oil giant TotalEnergies, seeking damages over alleged food and land rights violations in the company’s East Africa operations. The civil suit filed in Paris comes four months after the collapse of a similar case brought by activists who wanted to stop TotalEnergies’ pipeline project in Uganda and Tanzania, alleging environmental risks and an infringement of rights.Campaigners who oppose a project they insist violates the Paris climate accord were disappointed when the case was dismissed on procedural grounds before going to trial. The new litigation cites TotalEnergies’ alleged failure to comply with France’s “duty of vigilance” law and seeks compensation for the company’s alleged violations of land and food rights over six years. TotalEnergies has long denied the allegations.Five French and and Ugandan civic groups, including the French branch of Friends of the Earth and the...

A blistering heat wave is turning up the pressure on Texas’ power grid

Published Fri, 14 Feb 2025 00:26:05 GMT

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — On another 100-degree day in Texas, Sean Whitaker lingered outside a Dallas cafe after polishing off an iced coffee, having switched off the power to everything back home except his refrigerator. “That’s the reason I’m out,” said Whitaker, 52, finding shade at a patio table. As an unrelenting heat wave grips Texas for a second week, public appeals to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities have come with another ask of the state’s nearly 30 million residents: Conserve electricity if possible as demand on the power grid is stretched to projected record peaks. An early summer arrival of blistering temperatures — which have been blamed for at least two deaths — is taxing Texas’ power grid that many residents still view nervously two years after a deadly winter blackout. Regulators warn that Texas may offer a preview of what could be tight demand on grids across the U.S. this summer because of extreme temperatures worsened by climate...

ST. LOUIS - Nearing the halfway point of the season, the St. Louis Cardinals are in a pivotal spot where the team will soon need to decide if they're contenders or pretenders for the 2023 season. After hosting two games in London, the Cardinals return home to Busch Stadium behind a 32-45 record. They're 8.5 games back of the closest path to postseason (the NL Central title) and some models are giving them only a 3% chance to make the big dance this year. Nuggets GM Calvin Booth on free agency: “Hopefully we get the whole crew back.”

Published Fri, 14 Feb 2025 00:26:05 GMT

The Nuggets’ starters aren’t going anywhere.Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Michael Porter Jr., Aaron Gordon and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are all under contract for at least one more season. It’s Denver’s bench that could see some turnover following its historic championship run. Beginning with Bruce Brown, who already (and expectedly) declined his player option, the Nuggets have numerous unrestricted free agents heading into the summer. Brown, Jeff Green, DeAndre Jordan, Ish Smith, Reggie Jackson and Thomas Bryant are all on the verge of free agency, which begins at 4 p.m. MT Friday. If Nuggets GM Calvin Booth gets his way, this season’s roster will look a lot like last year’s.“Hopefully we get the whole crew back,” he told The Denver Post. The biggest question is Brown, who proved to be a free-agent steal last season. After he played out of position in Brooklyn, the Nuggets utilized him how he wanted to be played, and it paid off. The Nuggets can offer Brown up to $7.8 million for next s...

Casa Bonita eliminates tipping, going against service industry norm

Published Fri, 14 Feb 2025 00:26:05 GMT

Guests who dine at the Casa Bonita will not be asked to tip on their meals and drinks, challenging the conventional service industry model in Denver and beyond. The Lakewood landmark made its highly anticipated reopening to the public on June 23, offering locals the chance to buy tickets that include a meal. Tickets cost $39.99 for adults and $24.99 for kids ages 3 to 12. Kids under 3 are free.Higher-ups made the decision to eliminate tips — and raise the service staff’s base pay — after a soft opening period during which “we found guests simply weren’t tipping,” according to an emailed statement from Casa Bonita management.“We believe that’s due to our unconventional, pre-pay ticketing system,” the statement said.Staff were notified just days before the reopening. According to contracts reviewed by The Denver Post, Casa Bonita originally was planning to pay bartenders $14.27 an hour plus tips. That was amended to a flat fee of $30 an hour without tips, according to...
