His sister recently spoke to 7NEWS’ Kimberly Bookman at a playground in Randolph named in his memory. Nicole A. Simmonds-Jordan was with her children, who are getting to know an uncle they never met. “When I look at my children, I struggle to see and feel the hope and the optimism and the confidence and the protection that my parents made sure we had growing up,” Simmonds-Jordan said. “That pain is rooted from watching my parents live for the past nine years in an illogical order of them losing their son.”It has been a difficult road for the Simmonds family. Initially, DJ was not considered a victim of the marathon b...

Tampa Bay doesn’t deserve red-hot Rays, but Orlando does | Commentary

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 22:13:31 GMT

Running off at the typewriter …The Tampa Bay Rays were 11-0 heading into Wednesday night’s game with the Boston Red Sox and two wins shy of tying the record for the best start in Major League Baseball history — and still it doesn’t matter. The Rays are one of the best-run organizations in professional sports and do more with less than any team in any sport, yet they still have the fourth-worst attendance in all of baseball. Which is better than last year and the year before when they were third-worst in attendance even though they made the playoffs in both seasons. And in case you were wondering, the last time they made the World Series during a non-COVID season was 2008 when they had the fifth-worst attendance in the league.Translation: The Tampa Bay area simply doesn’t deserve such a quality team. Time to demolish the idea that baseball will ever work there.Raze the Rays!Move them to Orlando!Short stuff: Glad to see that the Florida Gators just restruc...

San Diego has bounced back from pandemic better than any other city, study finds

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Diego has surged back from COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns, but a few hundred miles north, San Francisco's downtown is near death, according to recent findings from the Institute of Governmental Studies public policy research center. In a study updated earlier this year titled "The Death of Downtown?" researchers looked at a number of economic health factors for 62 major cities to see which appeared least damaged by nearly three years of economic uncertainty. "With the initial shock of the pandemic, downtowns emptied out. Even as life has gradually returned to malls and neighborhood commercial corridors, the urban core is no longer a bustling center of activity. This trend has led many to wonder: is this finally the death of downtown?" study authors wrote. Researchers say a debate is forming about whether urban centers have emptied out permanently, similar to what was seen in the 1970s, or whether the recent urban resurgence will regain momentum as we fully e...
