Over 80 people led another search effort for the missing actor Julian Sands on Saturday, but he was not located and still remains missing. According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, over 80 Search and Rescue volunteers, deputies and staff searched for the 65-year-old with the help of two helicopters and drone crews. Aviation resources conducted aerial search and assessment efforts over remote areas across Mount Baldy, and the drone crews searched areas that were inaccessible to ground crews, police said. “Despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions,” SBSD said in a statement. “Multiple areas include steep terrain and ravines, which still have 10 [or more] feet of ice and snow.” FILE - Actor Julian Sands attends the "Forbidden Fruit" readings from banned works of literature on Sunday, May 5, 2013, in Beverly Hills, Calif. Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City is as Much Theme Park as Movie

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 00:16:19 GMT

Wes Anderson is a uniqueness, and we should be thankful he exists. But what is he? With each film, he’s doubled down on his particular battery of obsessive ideas (the chockablock dioramas, the loopy yarn-spinning, the deadpan quasi-farce, the overwhelming retro design), so that after a quarter-century of filmmaking, The French Dispatch (2021) was so intensely Wes-y, with more twitches and textual jokes than anyone could assimilate in one viewing, it felt almost like an experimental film. You have to salute his sui-generis-ness, his cultural curiosity, his subject-matter wanderlust, his distinctive visual craft, his attention to detail (often it feels like his films are all detail), and, honestly, his capacity for indexing some kind of late-Millennial/Gen Z toybox nostalgia, the hermetic pleasure of which, for his legion of devotees, should not be underestimated. If you fight in that pajama-clad army, you don’t ask questions, you just go. His newest confabulation, Asteroid City, is W...

By Trân Nguyên | Associated PressSACRAMENTO — California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration has proposed an end to public disclosure of investigations of abusive and corrupt police officers, handing the responsibility instead to local agencies in an effort to help cover an estimated $31.5 billion budget deficit. The proposal, part of the governor’s budget package that he is still negotiating with the Legislature, has prompted strong criticism from a coalition of criminal justice and press freedom groups, which spent years pushing for the disclosure rules that were part of a landmark law Newsom signed in 2021.The law allows the state Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training to investigate and decertify police officers for misconduct, such as use of excessive force, sexual assault and dishonesty. It requires the commission to make public the records of decertification cases. The Newsom administration now wants to get rid of that transparency element. The commission says the pu...
